Plastics have a very positive environmental profile. They are versatile, lightweight and low carbon. They help prevent food waste by protecting produce from "plot to plate” and extending shelf-life, allowing us to visit the supermarket infrequently but still enjoy a wide variety of products in between trips. Plastics are also very recyclable.
RPC Bebo helps to deliver sustainable packaging solutions for our customers. These include initiatives such as lightweighting, the incorporation of recycled material, and the use of barrier technology to protect products and minimise food waste. At the same time we are working hard to minimise the environment impact of our own manufacturing operations and throughout our supply chain. RPC operates a group-wide Sustainability Matters programme to promote and encourage best practice throughout all our operations.
RPC Bebo is committed to incorporating sustainability into our overall business strategy and to helping our customers to achieve their environmental goals. Indeed, since our inception we have been constantly developing innovative packaging solutions that provide sustainability benefits for our own direct operations, our customers and our supply chain.
Some of our achievements to date include:
- Ongoing light weighting initiatives – our market-leading fruit bowls and margarine packs, for example, are now some 20% lighter than a few years ago.
- The successful development of a variety of barrier solutions that provide extended ambient shelf-life and enhanced product protection, and which help to tackle the problem of unnecessary food waste.
- The successful development of Eco Pack. Through optimized product design the number of cups per shipment increased in order to reduce the CO2 emission coming from the transportation of products.
At the same time we continue to seek ways to further reduce the environmental impact of our manufacturing operations through greater efficiencies and reduced electricity and water consumption.
